On a very big week we read a very big section of the Torah – God appeared to Abraham and Sarah, God promised them a son in their old age, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, there’s another strange adventure of Abraham and Sarah and hidden identities, the birth of Isaac, the casting out of Hagar and Ishmael, and then the binding of Isaac – a better summary would fill this reflection.
There’s a lot going on for all of us right now. It can feel like too much. It took Abraham seeing his son beneath his own knife to understand just how wrong it was to sacrifice Isaac, and sometimes we don’t understand what to do until our difficulty looks us in the eyes.
We are Hebrews like Sarah and Abraham – crossing over through difficulties and struggling to do better. We strive together as a community of families and work to get it better with one another, for each other, and for our world.
