From the beginning, we have attempted to sum up the entirety of those commandments into a few concise principles. In this week’s Torah reading, Moses did the same thing, asking, rhetorically:
And now, Israel, what does God ask of you except to your God in awe, to walk in all God’s ways and to love God and to serve your God with all your heart and with all your being…? (Deuteronomy 10:12, adapted)
From 613 to 3, namely:
– hold God in awe,
– walk in all God’s ways,
– and serve God with all our selves.
We can say:
– look at the world and see the miracle of creation in all people and things,
– walk through the world mindful of our responsibilities to treating everyone and everything like the miracle that everything and everyone is,
– and devote the entirety of our beings to joyful, loving, and compassionate service of this higher calling.
After all, if God is in all aspects of creation, then taking care of creation is a joy.
May all our lists be this short!
A great week to everyone,
