Today on Yom Kippur we stand in the pivot point of the year for Jewish people.
Will we go forward into the year renewed? Will we be held back by things from last year from which we cannot untangle ourselves?
To give us a little inspiration to enter into the New Year with some hope, we can turn to the Torah reading for the coming Shabbat and look at Deuteronomy 32:4:
The Rock, whole-and-perfect are God’s doings, for all God’s ways are just. A God steadfast, lacking corruption, equitable and upright is God. If we go into the New Year in the right frame of mind, with good actions and integrity, then the Universe will meet us there with justice and support.
How does this work? It still feels like the Universe is an unfair and indiscriminate place, no matter what our attitude is. We must find context. We must find the point of view that allows us to appreciate our own blessings and share them with everyone.
Wishing all of you a meaningful day on this Yom Kippur, and a year filled with blessings to come,
Jonathan
