Yesterday we said goodbye to Amy Zeckhauser, may her memory always be for a blessing. Amy was a most impressive woman, a leader in our community, and a nearly indescribably vibrant force in the lives of all who met her during her more than 98 years with us.
While remembering her, we recalled Joseph in this week’s Torah reading, when he said to his brothers:
God has sent me ahead of you to ensure your survival on earth, and to save your lives in an extraordinary deliverance. (Genesis 45:7)
Amy was Joseph for so many of us. She took on the task of looking ahead and caring for us all, making sure that our survival, and even our thriving, was her concern as well as ours.
Now Amy’s charge is upon us all. We must serve as Joseph for each other and the world. We must look out and see what we can do – from the smallest things, like making sure everyone gets a good meal, to the largest, our concern for how well all our communities function.
Amy was like Joseph – caring for family and the world. May her memory inspire us all to pursue the welfare of all.
Wishing everyone a good week,
Jonathan
