Timing is so important and we learn this from our forefather Ya’akov in his decision to give his children both blessings and constructive rebuke at the moment that they would be most receptive: his deathbed. Moses, too, followed in his footsteps and instructed the people in this fashion just before his death.
A simple message with a profound impact. I recall some great marriage advice which speaks to this point (shared by Rabbi Manis Friedman): if you feel triggered by a spouse or child and want to express yourself, wait 24 hours before sharing. Allow your emotions to calm so that you will be more level-headed and your message will be better received.
So consider: how good is your timing? Are you saying the right things but at the wrong time? Do you need to wait until the other person will be more receptive or that you can communicate in a more effective way?
We need not wait our entire life like Ya’akov, but can definitely take his message to heart.
Shabbat Shalom!
